Our Pet Wellness Services

Physical Examination

No matter the reason our clients bring their pets in to be seen, our veterinary staff performs a complete physical exam. For our big dogs, this starts with our customer service representatives when they weigh your dog in the lobby. It continues in an exam room with our veterinary technicians and assistants as they obtain vital signs on your pet and discuss your pet’s medical history. Finally, our veterinarians perform a nose to tail examination. This thorough approach aids in the early detection and prevention of possible health issues.

During these examinations, our veterinarians and support staff members take time to address any concerns you might have about your pet’s well-being. We will offer advice on nutrition, exercise, and any needed changes in lifestyle to enhance your pet’s overall health. You and your pet will have our full attention so feel free to ask us any questions. We LOVE talking about your pets (and ours)!!!

Pet Vaccination

Whether we are discussing human or pet health, there is no other creation that has saved more lives than vaccines. Proper vaccination is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your pet’s health. Period.

With that said, our veterinarians recognize that not every pet needs every single available vaccine.

Our team of veterinary professionals stays up-to-date with the latest vaccination guidelines to make sure your pet gets the right vaccines at the perfect time. We tailor our vaccination recommendations based on your pet’s age, breed, lifestyle, and risk factors.

At Pinnacle, we do not price shop our vaccines. We use only the safest, most effective vaccines available. We do not use any adjuvanted vaccines in cats to ensure that we do not contribute to fibrosarcoma formation in these patients. Our canine vaccines utilize technology that allows not only protection from developing diseases but also prevents shedding of disease into the environment. For both dogs and cats, our vaccines induce a profound and robust immune response, leading to the highest possible level of protection for your pet. We truly believe in the vaccines that we use, for your pets… and our own!

While we do make individual vaccine recommendations for our patients, the exception to this is rabies. Vaccination against rabies is a legal requirement in South Carolina and we require all of our patients to be vaccinated in accordance with state law.

Fecal Examination

At Pinnacle, our veterinary team recommend fecal testing annually for all pets as part of our wellness screening and any time there are signs of gastrointestinal illness.

A fecal flotation test is a crucial part of wellness care for pets. Our veterinary team performs this test to find any parasites living in your pet’s digestive system. Identifying these parasites early can stop more serious health problems later on. The process involves taking a small sample of your pet’s stool and looking at it under a microscope for the eggs of worms, like roundworms, hookworms, and other harmful parasites.

While a fecal float can easily be performed in-house, at Pinnacle, we take our parasite testing to the next level. We offer a comprehensive fecal test that not only looks for eggs, but it detects antigen of parasites. This is important because parasites do not shed eggs all the time so if you test feces at a time during which the worm is not shedding, you will get a false negative result. In addition, some parasites can become encysted in muscle tissue where they are undetectable in stool but can still cause health problems. The antigen these parasites secrete can be detected regardless of whether the parasites are shedding their eggs or are hiding in the muscle tissues. This comprehensive fecal test ensures that we are able to find and treat parasitic infections before they become problematic.

Blood and Urine Tests

In addition to fecal testing, certain blood and urine tests are recommended annually. While our physical examination can tell us a lot about your pet’s health, we cannot look inside their bodies and lab work helps us to see the unseeable.

Dogs should be tested for heartworm disease every year, even when they are on monthly prevention. This test required just a few drops of blood and can be run in-house in about 20 minutes.

Our veterinary team also recommends annual lab work based on age, smaller panels in younger dogs and cats, and larger, more comprehensive panels as our pets age. Dogs and cats cannot tell us when they feel “off” and it’s in their nature to hide discomfort as a survival mechanism. Unfortunately, this means that by the time our dogs and cats show us they aren’t feeling well, an illness or disease may be very advanced. Annual lab work helps our veterinary team identify health issues early so we can treat them while they are still easily treatable.

Parasite Prevention

Parasite preventative medication is key in maintaining the health and wellness of our pets. It shields them from various parasites that could impact their well-being. Many of the parasites that infect our pets can be transmitted to us, too! As more parasites develop resistance to traditional medications, it’s imperative that pet owners and veterinary teams work together to develop a prevention plan that will keep your entire family protected. Our team is happy to discuss the available prevention options to keep your dog or cat protected against heartworms, intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms, fleas and ticks, as well as protection against less familiar parasites like mites and lice.
